Reforestation
Proper weed competition control is important to maximizing growth and survival of seedlings in tree planting projects. Eliminating grasses, particularly around the seedlings means more nutrients and moisture are available to the seedlings. Using a mechanical tree planter is one option to plant seedlings. While, more labour intensive, hand plantings works well for smaller sites and provides an excellent opportunity for community involvement. Newer restoration techniques for forest cover include “pits and mounds” and planting native hardwood seed as an alternative to seedlings. While there is much more to be learned about growth and survival from planting seeds, the multiple benefits and positive results are contributing to its increased use in restoration projects.
